Prehab and wellness

We believe in medical innovation

The True Meaning of Wellness

The word “wellness” has become ubiquitous in advertising and product promotions, vaguely associated with improved health and wellbeing, with no tangible metrics for efficacy. At NYDNRehab, we put the “well” back in wellness with our own objective approach, based on quantifiable data for diagnosis and treatment:

Wellness begins by identifying and profiling what the body is missing, and restoring it for optimal functional health and performance.

Achieving wellness is a highly individual journey. Optimal wellness for a professional athlete is different from optimal wellness for an octogenarian. But in both cases, wellness encompasses freedom from pain and dysfunction, enabling each individual to enjoy their best possible quality of life.

The 5 Ps of Wellness at NYDNRehab

Personalized diagnosis and treatment
1
Personalized diagnosis and treatment

At NYDNRehab, we never take a one-size-fits-all approach to patient care. We understand that each patient is anatomically unique, and every injury has its own specific characteristics. Our patients become active participants in their own diagnosis, providing feedback as we view the body’s structures in motion with real-time diagnostic ultrasound. We listen to our patients and respect their input and preferences throughout the rehabilitation process, with the end goal of restoring function, optimizing performance and safely returning athletes to sport with reduced risk of injury.

Physical assessment
2
Physical assessment

When it comes to physical wellness, a general fitness overview is not enough. At NYDNRehab, we use sophisticated technology to extract quantitative baseline data. Joint angles, force production, load transfers and other biomechanical markers help us identify deficits and pinpoint movement errors. We use that data to help you retrain your mind and body, to perform with greater efficiency, less wear and tear and reduced risk of injury.

Predictive diagnostics
3
Predictive diagnostics

We not only look at what is currently not working: we use some of the most advanced technologies available to human movement science, enabling us to thoroughly assess each patient and identify deficient motor patterns that may lead to dysfunction and injury down the road. We use quantitative data as a baseline to retrain neuromuscular patterns and produce optimal performance with less risk of injury.

Predictive diagnostics
4
Prevention of injuries

Faulty gait mechanics, muscular imbalances, overuse injuries and compensation patterns may eventually lead to serious injuries. Many of these deficiencies go undetected, as they cannot be seen with the naked eye. At NYDNRehab, we combine cutting edge technologies with innovative therapies to identify biomechanical defects and correct them before an injury occurs.

Performance Enhancement
5
Performance Enhancement

Whether you are an elite athlete looking for a competitive edge or an average patient wanting to perform activities of daily living without pain or dysfunction, the physical therapy team at NYDNRehab will help you find your peak performance potential. We use advanced technologies to identify biomechanical deficiencies and imbalances. We then apply innovative therapies like DNS, myofascial release techniques, virtual reality feedback training and more, to correct deficiencies and take each patient’s performance to the next level.

Benefits of Wellness Assessment and Treatment at NYDNRehab

You don’t have to be injured or in pain to benefit from a wellness assessment at NYDNRehab. Most people develop muscle imbalances, postural deficits and faulty movement mechanics over time that can lead to impaired movement and injuries down the road. A wellness check and tuneup can improve the way you move, giving you more energy, better daily function and a more youthful appearance.

Benefits include
  • Improved overall health, wellbeing and quality of life.
  • Better physical performance for sports and daily living.
  • Reduced risk of injuries.
  • Safe return to sport after rehab.
  • Prehab conditioning, to get you ready for physical activity or ensure the best outcome after surgery.

A wellness checkup is similar to a service inspection for your car. It not only looks for broken or malfunctioning parts, but predicts future potential problems. At NYDNRehab, we fine-tune your body, to keep it running like a well-oiled machine.

Recovery

We have all heard of rehab; it is a rehabilitative strategy for recovery from injury, surgery or even drug and alcohol abuse. But most people are not familiar with prehab, although it is gaining traction as an intelligent approach to wellness, fitness, sports and surgery. Prehab prepares your body for upcoming physical activities and events in order to reduce your risk of injury and ensure positive outcomes.

Most people undertake fitness programs and invasive surgical procedures casually, not thinking about potential negative outcomes. However, taking on physical challenges for which you are not prepared can lead to injuries and less than desirable outcomes. For example, you may take up running as a means to lose weight, never considering that your joints and muscles are not up to the task. Or you may opt for surgery to alleviate knee pain without giving a thought to the source of the pain, and whether you are in good enough shape to fully recovery from surgery.

The Role Of Pre-Hab

It is commendable to want to become and remain physically active, and to carry out daily activities pain-free. After all, your body was made to move, not to just sit behind a computer or lounge on a couch. However, long stretches of physical inactivity and daily repetitive activities can create muscle imbalances and joint weaknesses that make you prone to injury. Pre-hab identifies mechanical deficiencies and physical weaknesses, and works with you to correct them before you become injured.

You are a good candidate for prehab if you:

Have been physically inactive for long periods of time

Are having surgery on you spine or major joints like your knees, hips or shoulders

Are middle aged or older and generally out of shape

Are beginning a new sport like running, golf or tennis

Have been injured during sports or fitness activities

Experience daily minor aches and pains in your joints and muscles

candidate

Want to begin yoga, tai chi or Pilates

Need to lose weight

Have poor posture

Want to become stronger and more physically fit

Tire easily and are unmotivated to exercise

Even if you are a seasoned athlete or fitness enthusiast, prehab can help you perform better, with less pain and reduced risk of injury.

Benefits Of Pre-Hab

You would not think about going on a camping trip without making sure you have all the necessary gear and equipment for your safety and comfort. Nor would you plan a vacation overseas without consulting maps, guidebooks, and weather forecasts, and possibly learning a few words in a foreign language. Yet every day, people begin new fitness activities, take up new sports, or consent to surgery without any preparation or knowledge about what they are getting into. Prehab is a common-sense approach that prepares you for whatever physical challenges you face.

Benefits of Prehab
before surgery include
  • Patient education about functional deficits that need attention
  • Patient empowerment, giving you an active role in your treatment
  • Establishment of a functional baseline for post-surgery rehab
  • Faster recovery from surgery due to pre-surgery conditioning

Prehab before surgery means you will be out of bed sooner, and your recovery can begin immediately.

Benefits of Prehab prior to beginning fitness or sports activities include
  • Improved posture leading to better functional movement
  • Improved joint stability and range of motion
  • Balanced muscle strength throughout your body
  • Functional core strength
  • Improved movement mechanics
  • Sport- or activity-specific training
  • Improved cardiovascular fitness

Because prehab addresses muscle imbalances that lead to injuries, it can help prevent many common fitness and sports injuries like low back pain, hip and shoulder problems, hamstring strains and more.

In this instance, an athlete was originally diagnosed with minor quadriceps muscle strain and was treated for four weeks, with unsatisfactory results. When he came to our clinic, the muscle was not healing, and the patients’ muscle tissue had already begun to atrophy.

Upon examination using MSUS, we discovered that he had a full muscle thickness tear that had been overlooked by his previous provider. To mitigate damage and promote healing, surgery should have been performed immediately after the injury occurred. Because of misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment, the patient now has permanent damage that cannot be corrected.

The most important advantage of Ultrasound over MRI imaging is its ability to zero in on the symptomatic region and obtain imaging, with active participation and feedback from the patient. Using dynamic MSUS, we can see what happens when patients contract their muscles, something that cannot be done with MRI. From a diagnostic perspective, this interaction is invaluable.
