About NESA Neuromodulation

NESA neuromodulation is a new type of therapy that uses the body’s own electrical pathways to manipulate the autonomic nervous system. For many people, living in a busy metropolitan area like New York City places uncommon stress on multiple body systems. Exposure to environmental toxins, noise, threats to personal safety, workplace stress, erratic sleep habits and poor nutrition can take a heavy toll. Add to that the physical demands of sports and fitness activities, and the human body is pushed to its limits.

NESA is a non-invasive neuromodulation therapy that helps to calm overstimulated nerves, to restore the autonomic nervous system to a balanced state where it can function at its best. NYDNRehab is one of the few clinics in NYC to offer NESA neuromodulation therapy to our patients.

About Dr. Lev Kalika

Dr. Kalika has devoted his career to finding the most advanced and effective ways to treat physical pain, dysfunction and injuries. He has embraced new technologies and sought out innovative therapeutic treatment methods to provide his patients with the best and fastest treatment solutions.

Patients suffering from pain, fatigue and movement disorders often wander from doctor to doctor, spending months in physical therapy, under chiropractic care or seeking alternative treatments like acupuncture, without resolving their issues. When they run out of options, they often become frustrated and cave in to pressure to undergo surgery, only to find that it was not the solution.

The human body is an extremely complex organism, and chronic pain requires an integrative approach. Early in his career, Dr. Kalika studied under world renowned professors Karel Lewit and Vladimir Janda, both pioneers in integrative medicine. It soon became clear that allopathic medicine had tunnel vision, and that more effective diagnostic tools and treatment options were available to treat his metropolitan population.

Dr. Kalika recently traveled to Spain to learn about NESA neuromodulation, and to receive first-hand training from the technology’s source, to better serve his NYC patients. New Yorkers from all walks of life are under constant stress from urban living that affects their health and wellbeing.

NESA technology can help busy New Yorkers to restore their health and reverse the negative effects of stressful urban lifestyles. Athletes can benefit from NESA to promote recovery from training, enhance performance, and accelerate the healing of injured tissues.

Better Treatment Means Faster
Healing and Recovery

Physical therapy is a growing field that attracts people seeking alternatives to drugs and invasive procedures offered by mainstream medicine. Yet many physical therapy clinics are ill-equipped to meet the needs of patients whose symptoms fall outside conventional parameters. They are only able to offer one-size-fits-all solutions that don’t take into account the unique health profiles of individual patients.

At NYDNRehab, we take a personalized and holistic approach to patient care. Our advanced diagnostic tools, like high resolution diagnostic ultrasound, 3D gait analysis, computer-assisted biomechanical analysis and other technologically advanced assessment tools, ensure that your diagnosis is thorough and accurate.

Once diagnosed, we create a personalized treatment plan based on measurable baseline parameters, so we can track your healing journey and make adjustments as needed to ensure success. Our one-on-one approach to patient care ensures that no time is wasted in helping you reach your goals. Our clinic features the most advanced technologies available to accelerate healing and restore pain-free function. Our goal is to help you heal faster and better, so you can get back to doing the things you love.

How NESA Affects the Autonomic Nervous System

Every system in your body depends on your autonomic nervous system to regulate involuntary physiologic functions such as heart rhythms, blood pressure, respiration, digestion, and reproductive performance. Dysfunction of the autonomic nerves can have undesirable repercussions for human health, but until recently, doctors were clueless about how to treat the autonomic nerves.

Patients often present with symptoms and pain levels that do not correlate with diagnostic results. There is often a disconnect between the brain and body, caused by a dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system that sends pain signals that are out of sync with actual tissue damage.

Patients are often unaware of this phenomenon, and are often baffled and frustrated when there is no evidence of structural damage to support their perception of pain.

This phenomenon is often present in patients who report pain related to:

  • TMJ

  • Sciatica

  • Back And Neck Pain

  • Shoulder Pain

  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS)

  • Pelvic Pain

  • Non-Cardiac Chest Pain

  • Fibromyalgia

NESA works by delivering patented intelligent microcurrents through low impedance areas of the body, using the NX signal device. A biphasic low frequency current is generated and introduced into the patient’s electrical circuit via 24 semi-electrodes, attached at the distal nerve endings of the hands and feet.

The device generates an electrical algorithm that is delivered via contact of the semi-electrodes with clean skin, in a series of intermittent and cyclical stimuli. The electrical stimulus travels through the patient’s autonomic neural pathways, restoring optimal neural signaling to the brain.

Benefits of NESA
Neuromodulation Therapy

NESA non-invasive neuromodulation therapy uses electrical currents to calm and regulate the autonomic nervous system, to restore balance throughout the body.

Beneficial effects of NESA neuromodulation include:

  • Relief of chronic and neuropathic pain

  • Accelerated recovery from injuries

  • Reduced muscle fatigue

  • Improved sleep quality

  • Reduced stress and anxiety

  • Improved focus and proprioception

You don’t have to be injured or in pain to enjoy the benefits of NESA non-invasive neuromodulation. NESA therapy can help you manage lifestyle-induced stress, for better health and improved performance. It can also help your body to quickly recover from sports and physical activities.

In this instance, an athlete was originally diagnosed with minor quadriceps muscle strain and was treated for four weeks, with unsatisfactory results. When he came to our clinic, the muscle was not healing, and the patients’ muscle tissue had already begun to atrophy.

Upon examination using MSUS, we discovered that he had a full muscle thickness tear that had been overlooked by his previous provider. To mitigate damage and promote healing, surgery should have been performed immediately after the injury occurred. Because of misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment, the patient now has permanent damage that cannot be corrected.

The most important advantage of Ultrasound over MRI imaging is its ability to zero in on the symptomatic region and obtain imaging, with active participation and feedback from the patient. Using dynamic MSUS, we can see what happens when patients contract their muscles, something that cannot be done with MRI. From a diagnostic perspective, this interaction is invaluable.

to be a complete tear with muscle contraction
