ACL Injury Treatment Without Surgery Blog ACL Injury

There are various injuries related to sports. As more and more people engage in sport activities, the rate of injuries has also increased. The most frequent injury to the ligaments of the knee is the rapture of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament, otherwise known as ACL. An ACL injury often occurs when great pressure is applied to the knee in a twist either applied directly or indirectly. Majority of the cases of ACL tears occur without any direct contact but from making a wrong landing from a jump or side stepping. It mostly occurs when an athlete is landing or pivoting especially during a run or jump and the knee gives away. This is then followed by sudden pain and swelling of the injured knee as a result of bleeding into the join. Sometimes this incident is accompanied by a tearing of the meniscus. The victim of this injury often reports a popping sound at the time of injury.

The availability of rehabilitation centers that is efficient and easily accessible by the athletes with ACL ruptures will facilitate their quick recovery and avoid long-term issues that could arise from not receiving treatment. NY Dynamic Neuromuscular Rehabilitation is such a place where the athletes can receive ACL tear treatment or just the partial treatment. With advanced technology and expert professionals, the rehabilitation center works towards restoring the health of their patients. The healing process takes time and therefore requires the patience and dedication of the patient in order to achieve the desired results. The treatment of ACL injury has over the years evolved to combine both the old and the new methods of treating the ACL rupture. This treatment involves the strengthening of muscles, enhancing the range of motion to help the patient recover fully and neuromuscular re education which enables patients to retain themselves and reduce the possibility of the injury occurring again.

In this instance, an athlete was originally diagnosed with minor quadriceps muscle strain and was treated for four weeks, with unsatisfactory results. When he came to our clinic, the muscle was not healing, and the patients’ muscle tissue had already begun to atrophy.

Upon examination using MSUS, we discovered that he had a full muscle thickness tear that had been overlooked by his previous provider. To mitigate damage and promote healing, surgery should have been performed immediately after the injury occurred. Because of misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment, the patient now has permanent damage that cannot be corrected.

The most important advantage of Ultrasound over MRI imaging is its ability to zero in on the symptomatic region and obtain imaging, with active participation and feedback from the patient. Using dynamic MSUS, we can see what happens when patients contract their muscles, something that cannot be done with MRI. From a diagnostic perspective, this interaction is invaluable.

Dynamic ultrasonography examination demonstrating
the full thickness tear and already occurring muscle atrophy
due to misdiagnosis and not referring the patient
to proper diagnostic workup

Demonstration of how very small muscle defect is made and revealed
to be a complete tear with muscle contraction
under diagnostic sonography (not possible with MRI)
