The Amazing Benefits of 3D Gait Analysis for Performance, Pain Relief and Injury Prevention

Our Awards

Running is a fundamental human activity that we learn in our formative years and tend to take for granted. However, it is easy to develop bad habits and imbalances over time that can slow you down, cause chronic pain and increase your risk of injury. For runners, poor gait mechanics can dramatically reduce performance and cause overuse injuries. Many runners accept pain as an unavoidable consequence of running, and continue to push themselves until an injury stops them in their tracks. But pain during running is not normal, and gait analysis and retraining can help eliminate it.

3D Gait Analysis is a Game Changer

Gait analysis looks at your joint angles, load distribution and other factors that play into gait mechanics. Until recently, gait analysis was two-dimensional. We were able to calculate joint angles in the sagittal plane where flexion and extension take place, but not in the transverse, or rotational plane, where most injuries occur. With 2D, it is impossible to distinguish whether the anomalies we are seeing are a cause or an outcome of pain and other issues. Recent technological innovations have introduced breakthrough tools for gait analysis. We are now able to analyze gait in three dimensions, to get an accurate picture of rotational movements in the transverse plane.
The difference between 2D and 3D is huge! 3D gait analysis is significantly more accurate than 2D, and it gives us the ability to manipulate the patient’s skeleton, to get a better picture in cases that are not straightforward.

High-Tech Tools for Accurate Analysis

In addition to our 3D gait analysis technology, NYDNRehab uses other innovative high-tech tools and methods for gait analysis that you will not find at any other NYC clinic:
  • Specialized instrumented treadmill with pressure analysis to measure vertical ground reaction forces and center of pressure (CoP) through all phases of the gait cycle.
  • Baseline testing and retesting, before, during and after treatment. We offer free retesting to our patients, which allows runners to see if they have achieved desired improvements in their quest to become a better runner.
  • Meticulous clinical examinations, specific to running injury prevention and performance, give us insight into the mechanisms of pain and dysfunction.
  • Functional muscle assessment screening lets us evaluate muscle strength, firing sequence, coordination and bilateral imbalances.
  • Our running-specific questionnaire gives us vital information we need to individualize your training program.
  • KINEO AI machine testing lets us measure true muscle strength and function.

3D Retraining for Optimal Running Gait Performance

A running gait analysis tells us everything we need to know about your gait mechanics, so we can create an individualized retraining program to address your specific needs. Our 3D system allows us to customize running retraining programs that cannot be achieved elsewhere in NYC. Read more about running analysis and retraining here NYDNRehab also houses the only privately available C.A.R.E.N system. C.A.R.E.N stands for computer assisted rehabilitation environment, a virtual reality training system that allows us to zoom into individual joints if necessary, to perfect your running mechanics.. In addition, Dr.Kalika is certified to perform diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasonography (MSUS), to view joints, muscles, bones and nerves in real time. MSUS lets us uncover hidden injuries and abnormalities that cannot be detected with the naked eye. We don’t stop until we identify the true source of pain and find a way to resolve it. Read more about diagnostic MSUS here Running gait analysis and retraining are essential health care requirements for any serious runner. If you want to run faster, perform better, reduce injury risk and eliminate pain, schedule a cutting-edge 3D gait analysis today. You will be amazed at the difference running gait analysis and retraining can make.

In this instance, an athlete was originally diagnosed with minor quadriceps muscle strain and was treated for four weeks, with unsatisfactory results. When he came to our clinic, the muscle was not healing, and the patients’ muscle tissue had already begun to atrophy.

Upon examination using MSUS, we discovered that he had a full muscle thickness tear that had been overlooked by his previous provider. To mitigate damage and promote healing, surgery should have been performed immediately after the injury occurred. Because of misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment, the patient now has permanent damage that cannot be corrected.

The most important advantage of Ultrasound over MRI imaging is its ability to zero in on the symptomatic region and obtain imaging, with active participation and feedback from the patient. Using dynamic MSUS, we can see what happens when patients contract their muscles, something that cannot be done with MRI. From a diagnostic perspective, this interaction is invaluable.

Dynamic ultrasonography examination demonstrating
the full thickness tear and already occurring muscle atrophy
due to misdiagnosis and not referring the patient
to proper diagnostic workup

Demonstration of how very small muscle defect is made and revealed
to be a complete tear with muscle contraction
under diagnostic sonography (not possible with MRI)
